“Did they (the supervisors) know you spent less than you had last year before they cut this year's budget?” asked board member Aline Johnson.
"I had not brought that to their attention,” Mrs. Buntin answered. She explained that the Welfare Department, unlike the school administration, couldn’t retrieve any local funds left over by spending them at the close of the fiscal year. Since the welfare budget depends on state reimbursement of local funds, “the money is just not there until we spend it,” she said.
Mrs. Johnson asked if the supervisors could have learned from the county treasurer that not all of last year’s local money was spent.
“I don't think anybody keeps that close account of what we spend except us,” the Social services director concluded.
