Replacement of the old Route 1001 bridge in Sperryville with an upgraded structure will not automatically result in heavy truck traffic using the street that runs from the bridge to the Corner Store.

According to D. L. Camper, assistant secondary road engineer in Richmond, state law allows the bridge to be posted closed to through truck traffic should public health, safety and welfare warrant the action.

Under section 46117.2 of the Virginia Code, the board of supervisors, following a public hearing, may request that the highway department close the bridge and access , road to through truck traffic provided a reasonable alternative route is available. Upon receiving the formal request from the local governing body, the highway department must also hold a public hearing, according to law. Legislation setting up this procedure was passed by the General Assembly in 1973.

Don Askew, resident engineer for Rappahannock County, said he’d learned from his district engineer that the bridge could be closed to through truck traffic. Similar action has been taken, he said, in Fairfax and Prince William Counties. “Regardless of
