1940. The same year, however, he got his first singing engagement in the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production of “H.M.S. Pinafore.” His stunning performance in the “Merry Widow” won him an MGM screen test and film contract, and he subsequently appeared in several movies.
In 1945, he first appeared in New York, where the theater was crowded for his performance of “Carousel.” Raitt emerged from that as one of the most notable male stars of the Broadway musical stage. Since this he has received many awards.
