In the past, Rappahannock County has been plagued with illegal road hunters, non-sportsmen who fire from cars and pick-up trucks onto posted property.
Bankston emphasized that Virginia law prohibits hunting from the road. “It is illegal anywhere in the state to discharge a firearm within 100 yards of a public road,” he stressed.
Paraphrasing the National Rifle Association’s ten commandments of hunter safety, Bankston gave some suggestions:
1. Treat every gun with respect. Always assume it’s loaded.
2. Never point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot.
3. Be extremely careful in entering or exiting a vehicle with a firearm.
4. Never carry a loaded firearm in a car. It’s a potential accident looking for a place to happen. According to Bankston, most hunting accidents occur within ten feet of a motor vehicle and between people who are ten Feet or less apart.
