Wilderness
Meeting Set
The Northern Shenandoah Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a workshop on wilderness areas on Saturday, January 26, at the Shenvalee Motel in New Market.
The movement towards designating large tracts of public land as wilderness areas has been sparked by environmentalists concerned with preserving a portion of national parks and forests in their natural state.
Once an area is designated as wilderness, certain restrictions apply, including prohibition of timbering and mining, a ban on access by motorized vehicles and some limitations on fire fighting and other general use by the public.
The Audubon Society’s wilderness workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue to approximately 4 p.m. Following opening statements on the backgrotind of America's wilderness heritage, a slide show on Virginia's 14 wilderness proposals will be presented. The agenda will also cover' provisions of the Wilderness Preservation Act and an analysis of misunderstandings about and opposition to wilderness designations.
