To the editor:
I was surprised to read Supervisor Chairman Luke’s complaint that the Izaak Walton League has done nothing to improve the dumpster site at Huntly. After all, dumpster sites are the County’s responsibility.
True, the local League Chapter did decide last year to screen and otherwise spruce up the Huntly dumpster site, and then others as finances permitted.
We found, however—and I thought Col. Luke was aware of this at the time, but perhaps he has since forgotten—that the Huntly dumpster site belongs to a private landowner who wants the dumpsters removed from his property. Our plan simply could not be carried out—not until a permanent site is acquired.
The League is increasingly concerned about the County’s trash problems. Those problems can only get worse as population growth is encouraged, unless taxes are raised high enough to finance an adequate waste management effort.
Since every existing-*** dumpster site seems to be the focus of some sort of controversy, The Rappahannock County Izaak Walton League has decided to turn its interest to see the overall trash management program and budget. We would like to see improvement at specific dumpster sites, but any work in that area is obviously premature until the whole program is on sound footing.
