“It needs study,” interjected Dick Latham. “I don't want to see too much of the tax burden shifted to young couples just starting out."
Hubert Gilkey asked where the county would pick up the money to offset revenue from taxes on farm machinery, livestock and household goods.
Luke replied that the tax rate may have to be adjusted upward.
Using the commissioner of revenue’s figures, Gilkey noted that savings for individual farmers could be significant, with personal property tax bills for a large operation dropping from $35,000 to $17,000 without the levy on livestock and farm equipment.
