For three weeks, local citizens have been collecting signatures in support of the appointment of two members at large to the school board, a proposal which members of the Rappahannock board of supervisors had volunteered to raise at Thursdays session. But the suggestion was never voted on or even discussed at the September 4 meeting.
Instead, after chairman E. P. Luke criticized the board school board members for (1) holding overly long executive sessions. (2) publicly criticizing teachers in front of their classes and (3) refusing to take action on necessary capital outlay to relieve the overcrowding at both public schools, the supervisors voted unanimously to request a progress report on expansion programs within 90 days.
Luke opened his remarks by recalling the lopsided vote in the June referendum in which local citizens voted by a margin of almost 10 to 1 to transfer authority for school board appointments from the electoral trustees to the board of supervisors.
