In answer to questions, the tax department representative said the equalization board, as a public body, must advertise at least ten days prior to meeting in open session. The board, he said, has a positive duty both to raise and lower assessments' to achieve equal taxation and so doesn’t have to wait until a citizen complains before changing an assessment.
Any change, however, must come in the form of an order to the commissioner of revenue and will be public record, Jordan added.
In answer to a request from the chairman, Jordan said the supervisors may sit in on the training sessions for the members of the equalization board. He added that the department of taxation is currently printing reassessment handbooks which will also be available.
