Vacancies Publicized?
Dave Moore asked if the supervisors would, in the future, give the public notice of an upcoming vacancy before voting on an appointment.
Luke replied that there's no rule governing the procedure the board must follow. “Each supervisor can handle it differently,” he said, adding that he wouldn't presume to tell his fellow board members how to act on a vacancy from their district.
Wakefield supervisor Hubert Gilkey said he would have a public meeting with his constitutents to gain their views. “The referendum was a message that the people want a voice in who’s put on the school board."
Luke added that he would also meet with his constitutents before acting on a school board vacancy.
H. B. Wood, StonewallHawthorne supervisor who appointed Nelson Lane to the school board last month, said the expiration of school board terms is public record unless a resignation occurs. He added that he’d received no calls of complaint regarding his appointment of Lane.
