We had the last morning free for shopping and we used it successfully to fill our quota of gifts for family and friends. Srinagar can be warmly recommended for gift shopping.
Mr. Nirash picked us up at one o’clock as promised, to take us to the airport for the 3:15 plane. We were a bit jumpy, as we had to catch the one-and-only flight to Delhi that day in order to make our scheduled departure for Paris at 7 the next morning. Otherwise we should have been in real trouble. But our friend did not fail us.
Delhi was rather warmer than Srinagar, though only 25 centigrade (77 fahrenheit). not 35 (95) as Virginia thought she heard the stewardess announce. Our hotel room at the Ashoka was ready for us. but it was not in the handsome new wing, and its price reminded us again how much we had been favored on the official trip. We were duly called at 4 a.m., survived the bedlam and navigated the formalities of the airport, were given excellent seats in the 747. and were off on time.
We left India with real regret. If the Indian planners of our trip hoped to make new friends for their country in the U.S.A.. they succeeded with at feast two of us. We would certainly recommend any American who can afford the fare to take a look at India. He will not be disappointed.
But, if you are over 60, break your journey and spend at least one night in Europe coming and going.
