In regard to at-large appointments. Luke maintained that supporters would not be able to convince the supervisors to go along with this action by discussing the issue in the court room. Those in favor of at-large members, he said, must do more “grass roots" work to gain public support first.
"The other thing to look at is you could lose. If we vote (on the at-large appointments) and you lose, you’ve lost that option." Luke warned.
"That doesn’t mean it couldn’t be brought up again." argued Martin, calling for a vote so that citizens will know where their elected representatives stand.
"We're not going to discuss that today." answered Luke, adding that the supervisors wouldn't even consider setting a date in the future for debate on at-large appointments. "Your idea is tabled." he concluded.
Pressed further, he added that the supervisors “might consider” at-large appointments if the school board reftised to take action on capital outlay within three months.
