One of the beautiful, old homes in Rappahannock. The Shade, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Summers reached its 200th birthday this ye^r and a gala celebration took place there Saturday. During afternoon and evening open house, approximately 400 friends joined Mr. and Mrs. Summers in celebration at a buffet.

Built in 1780, the house stands in a secluded spot, between Woodville and - Washington on Routes 622 and 621. The land was an original grant of 3500 acres from King George III to Charles Green. Charles Green gave The Shade to his son, James William Green.
