These are the names she’s put together of customers who have already patronized Faith Mountain or who have been mentioned as friends who would like to receive a catalog. Once a person has made an order, there is a greater chance that he or she will order again, so the list actually gets more accurate as time wears on. Advertising the catalog in national magazines is expensive but brings a tremendous response. The person who actually writes away for a Faith Mountain catalog also is more likely to place an order.

Although the responses , can be predicted the expense of making up and mailing out a catalog are so great that there is definitely a risk involved. ‘‘There are no schemes to get rich quick in the country,” Cheri said. "Or if there are, we haven't discovered them. To be able to make a living in the country - to live where we want to. .live and to dq wb*t we want to do - this seems like a real victory.”

Cheri is quick to point out that her husband, Martin - a stonemason, has provided not only the financial backing and affectionate encouragement for the shop, but has been the one to offer practical business advice for keeping the shop growing during hard financial times. "He’s encouraged me every step of the way as far as the mail-order business goes,” she said. "He’s more able to ♦ike a risk, to foresee the iture and predict trends lan I am.”
