Saturday night is Halloween, the traditional time for “gobble-uns” to be out roaming the countryside. As it’s celebrated today, it brings to mind pictures of little ghosts and fairy princesses, jack-o-lanterns and costume parties. It’s truly a time of fun for children and devoid of any real terror of the likes that Orphan Annie’s tales once evoked in her listeners.
But for our ancestors, Halloween was a mixture of pagan and Christian beliefs, some involving supernatural practices. It was the “hallowed eve,’’ the night that the dead walked in
