The proposed highway and bridge construction and reconstruction will cost approximately $3.1 billion over the six years. Of that amount, $597 million is expected from current revenue sources, and $1.1 billion will be available in federal aid if it can be matched, leaving a need for $1.4 billion in additional state funds for highway and bridge construction and reconstruction.
During the same period, maintenance of the existing highway system will require approximately $2.6 billion, about $247 million more than anticipated from present sources.
The six-year program also proposes a total of $132.5 million in state aid for public transportation. Some $73.8 million is expected from existing sources, leaving $58.7 million required in additional funds.
The total cost of the highway improvement and maintenance work and public transit aid would amount to $5.8 billion by Fiscal year 1987-88. Approximately $3 billion is expected from existing revenue sources and the $1.1 billion will be available in federal aid for highways if it can be matched. This means the state would have to raise $1.7 billion in additional funding if objectives of the program are to be obtained
