The horses received a veterinary check to determine fitness before being permitted to attempt the race. The lungs, legs and heart of each entry were examined. Out of more than 100 horses entered, most passed the check. Those that did not completely pass. the examination on Friday were asked to return Saturday morning for another attempt.
The sole participant from the five county area was Patty Alexander of Washington. Patty completed the 100 mile course in fifth place with a time of 17 hours and 10 minutes. Since Patty had entered both events, she was eligible for the IAHA award. Patty’s horse, Starez, a 'A Arabian, was named Reserve Champion IAHA endurance horse. The runners also had a medical check, but not for competency reasons.
