Individual cages shall have solid bottoms; pallets or resting boards constructed of a non-porous material may be provided so animals can rest or sleep oft the floor; there shall be faucet and hose connections provided a t convenient locations tor washing and cleaning the animal housing area; and disinfectants or germicidal agents shall be used when cleaning the housing or confinement area.
Of the counties surrounding Culpeper, only one is in apparent compliance with the state law. according to Roy. Fauquier has an animal shelter. Madison and Rappahannock have animal control officers but no shelter; Orange has a dog pound but no provision for other animals. The Culpeper facility is the only one available for mans surrounding residents, and Roy said that they do handle a sizeable amount of out-ofcounty dogs, cats and wild animals each year. Animals at the shelter are kept as long as there is a reasonable chance for adoption; efforts are made to improve their health if it is poor; they are given required shots and when adopted, it is with the understanding that their new owners will have them spayed or neutered at a reduced rate by a local veterinarian.
