In with the sad cases are some real successes. “Traveler”, a dog who roamed the streets of Culpeper and frustrated the dog warden on several occasions, was finally brought to the Shelter and placed in a new home. Roy captured him with a homemade lasso, but once confined, he loved the Shelter and wasn’t at all anxious to get out. Before his successful placement, he escaped from one home and made his way back for several visits to the shelter.
Another dog was lost right at the Rappahannock County line by a woman traveling through. Roy’s efforts located the woman and returned the dog in a few days.
Donna Roy is ideally suited for her job - a job she did on a volunteer basis until the Shelter was funded by Culpeper County last January. “As a child, I always wanted to be a vet,” she said. “But times were different then and my father thought that the life of a vet would be no life for a woman. So I volunteered twelve years ago to help here and now my position is funded."
