Pay tor school secretaries ranges from 74 percent ot a first year teacher’s compensation tor a first year secretary to 87 percent tor a secretary with II years on the job. This year, an administrative secretary gets 79 percent ot the 1982-83 starting teacher's pay. the special services secretary 74 percent and the bookkeeper 103 percent.

Using the first year’s teacher’s $12,192 compensation as the base of the artificial index scale, the high school principal gets 221 percent of that amount; elementary principal 204 percent; high school assistant principal 181 percent; elementary assistant principal Ib8 percent; special services coordinator 148 percent; supervisor of transportation 125 percent; school bus mechanic 59 percent; maintenance supervisor 112 percent; high school cusiodium 53 percent; elementary school custodian 73 percent; cafeteria supervisor, managers and chief cook 49 percent and cafeteria workers from 37 percent with one year’s experience to 42 percent with three war’s experience.

On the artificial index scale, experience pay increments tor teachers range Iront one percent after three vears in the Rappahannock sxstem to three percent for the remaining steps except after nine. 12 and 17 vears at which points teachers currently get two percent raises.

The report, prepared by assistant superintendent Gerald Lysik. notes that the school board had agreed earlier by consensus to review the salarx index concept at the August 10 meeting. “In an attempt to develop an appropriate starting point it becomes essential that the school division’s present 1982- 83 salarx structure for all categories of employment be reviewed." Lysik maintains.

The assistant superintendent recommends in the report that the School Board (I) decide what steps should be created for all categories of employment where steps do not currently exists (2) revise existing steps where neccssarx (3) establish an index figure for every step within every category of employment and (4) review the status of a proposed 1983- 84 salarx index at the September 14 meeting.
