share by giving the county title to the recreation center property, creating the first county park. But the supervisors were willing to accept, title to the land only after assurances that they wouldn’t be asked to allocate tax dollars for the park's maintenance.

That's where the community spirit comes into play. If the county isn’t to spend funds from the local budget to maintain the park, free labor has to come from somewhere. It’s a park that belongs to the people of Rappahannock and the people of Rappahannock need to turn out early Saturday morning to paint signs, put together the new swing sets, clear weeds from the exercise trail and rocks from the playground area, dig holes for the barbeque pits down by the river and a long list of other “parkkeeping” chores.

It won’t be all sweat and no fun. The Recreation Authority is providing cokes and hotdogs and in between tasks, there will be plenty of time for comraderie and getting to know your neighbor who is working the weedeater or wielding the hammer.

We hope to see a host of Rappahannockers there.
