This Saturday is a perfect time for Rappahannock's community spirit to burst into full bloom.
Volunteers of all ages with strong backs and yard tools are needed from 9 a.m. until noon to help with the cleanup of the county’s first park at the Recreation Center across the highway on Route 211 from Washington.
Members of the former Rappahannock Recreation Association, which created and managed the center after the four acre tract was donated by Col. Earl Holmes, persuaded the county supervisors to turn the old association into an arm of local government, the Rappahannock Recreation Authority. As a governmental entity, the authority was eligible for state grants. It lost no time in applying for funds from the Virginia Commission on Outdoor Recreation and was successful in the first shot out of the gate, winning a $63,837 matching grant to build tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic areas and an exercise trail this summer. There was even money left over for new playground equipment.
