Spieker was wearing a giant grin as her team came off the practice course last week. And with reason. The boys had just finished their first timed run over the Blue Rock Farms course and her top runner had completed the distance just 40 seconds off the school record.
Junior Scott Keithley ran the 2.7 miles in 15:14. ‘‘That's real good for the beginning of the season." noted Spieker. nodding her head with satisfaction. Last year. Keithley finished third in district and regional meets and seventh in state and, judging from his first timed practice, should do even better in 1982-83, she added.
Sophomore Ronnie Atkins is already showing the speed that put him on Keithley's heels at the end of last season. The Panthers' number two runner is ‘‘staving right up there with Scott, really close!” noted Spieker. flashing another smile of satisfication.
The grin stayed pul as the coach reported on the progress of number three runner Ricky Shaw, another sophomore. “He's developed real high knee action. He has enormous stride length. That’s what you look for in a cross country runner."
Running fourth after the first timing. Eldwood Dodson "just works and works and works and works," Spieker continued. "He's right up there with the big boys. It's great!"
Craig Kenyon, another top contender for RCHS. sustained an injury in the first timed run last week, making it difficult to place him in the team rankings, (he coach noted. "He could move up to two or three. Craig's a strong runner."
David Dodson, the last of the returneees from last year, continues to show improvement and will be counted on to add points to the RCHS tally, noted Spieker, still smiling.
