“MINI-INCISION SURGERY
OFTHE FOOT”
Quite often I am asked about the new “mini” incision surgery for bunions and other foot deformities. This is a technique that was developed in the last few years that does have some definite merit. It consists of an incision about one half inch in length that is used as a window to correct the underlying boney problems. A special type of instrument is inserted into the wound and the changes are produced through this window.
There are a fair number of indications for this type of surgery. It is important to understand that there is a significant portion of problems that cannot be repaired in this manner, because the structures have to be visualized for change.
If the mini-procedure can be performed there is usually less discomfort, less swelling, and the patient is able to return to shoes more quickly.
