Smoot said that when she returned home early the next morning, she experienced severe chest pains and called the Washington rescue squad to return to the hospital. Crew members and later doctors explained to her that the pains were common to those experiencing an intake of water in their lungs.
Now, Smoot said, she’s feeling fine and glad to be alive. Her near drowning has resulted in a bad cold, another common after-effect.
