The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the National Guard Armory on Waterloo Road in Warrenton on Thursday, July 21, from noon to 6 p.m.
The Fauquier Chapter which serves Fauquier and Rappahannock counties has set a quota of 100 units (pints) for this blood drive. Red Cross officials report that blood donations are down markedly due to a misplaced fear that donors can contract acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) from contaminated needles. Medical authorities emphasize* one fact that should put to rest any donor’s fear of getting a disease by giving blood: needles used by bloodmobiles are one-time use instruments and are discarded after that use.
Less than three percent of the population of Fauquier and Rappahannock counties have been giving blood, some donors many times. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, fewer than 1,000 people in this area donated blood. That number will have to be increased by several hundred if the Fauquier Chapter is to meet its quota for the 1983- 1984 fiscal year of more than 1,400 units.
