School Board Chairman Beverly Massie complemented Chappell on his presentation and said that his proposal would fill a need she saw for some of Rappahannock’s students. “We do a good job of providing courses for the academically sound student and the below-grade-level student,” she said. “I think that sometimes the borderline student is neglected. These changes would address those needs.”
“This is my idea of what a school board meeting should be,” Massie added. “We get so involved in nuts and bolts that we often don’t have time to consider the quality of education. This has been a pleasure.”
Massie asked if the new math course offerings would allow movement between below-grade-level courses to the grade-level math courses as math skills improved. Chappell responded that this would be the case.
“We need to tax our youngster to the maximum,” Chappell added.
