direct effect on the tax rate since the school budget comprises the majority of the county’s expenditures.
The group of Rappahannock citizens is forming to address this issue and bring it into public focus prior to the November elections. Many of us are willing to have a reasonable tax increase to support specific improvements, such as upgrading curriculum, adoption of an index pay scale and a modest facilities expansion at the high school.
An excerpt from the recent “Action for Excellence” report published by the Education Commission of the United States says a great deal: “There are few national efforts that can legitimately be called crucial to our national survival. Improving education in America—improving it sufficiently and improving it now—is such an effort. Our purpose is to reach as many citizens as possible and to persuade them to act. The facts on education and achievement in America have recently been gathered and presented by many different groups. What is needed now is to act on those facts.”
I urge anyone who shares these concerns to join us in preparing and supporting a specific list of improvements for our schools.
