Kathleen Schilling, the former Director of children’s education at St. Luke’s Church in McLean, Va., has been chosen to succeed Camille Harris as the Executive Director of the Child Care and Learning Center of Washington, Va. Schilling was appointed by the Center’s 12-member board and she assumed her duties December 27.
The transition takes place after 9 years of diligent service by Camille Harris who founded the Center—originally an elementary school—and presided over its development.
And it has developed. The Center was first located in a basement and enrolled a mere 10 children; funding and facilities were severely inadequate but personnel, namely Harris, persevered. She soon realized that the demand for an elementary school was too small to justify its continued existence, therefore she converted the school into a child care center.
The conversion marked the beginning of the Center as we know it today, it having evolved from solely a preschool program into a multi-purposed Center. In addition to an after-school program, the Center now offers programs for Infant-Toddlers, Two-year olds, and Pre-Schoolers.
Primarily an educator with a variety of teaching experience, Harris had no interest in running a “baby-sitting” clinic. Instead, she wanted to “create an environment that would provide for
