To the editor:
After three weeks of searching for our seven-year-old, male German Shepherd, lost Dec. 5 while we were visiting long-time friends near Boston, Va., my husband Darwin has written this poem which may interest your readers:
Here, Woodsy
Your big ears pointed aloft and cupped wide we feel must hear forever—somewhere. We remember you’ve often heard our call echoing from the ridges and raced to touch us and leap with joy.
Your dark eyes shining with surging life, sometimes following high jets or red-tails soaring, or rolling to catch our eyes and read what’s brewing in us, we feel could recognize from afar the mountains where we’ve lived from your puppyhood together.
Your black nose so sensitive to fragrances of life, lifting into the wind to test all sounds and glimpses, finding our hiding places in play, kissing our hands or faces, giving and receiving love, we feel could scent the trend of lines we’ve tread in sorrowful search.
Your ready reading of human talk
