With soberness tempering my idealism, I will venture the thought that justice should not be elusive, that it need not be. We are endowed with the good sense to arrive at it, and it is necessary that we do so. Justice-that is, fair negotiations, equitable resolutions, honesty, openess-invigorates a community by freeing it of hostilities that sap productive and creative energies. Animosity is exhausting. Therefore, injustice is simply not affordable and a community does well to mobilize against it in an effort to defeat it.

I will save for a future column the messier details that dwell somewhere below the plane of idealism pointed to in this column. For now it is enough to say that we must look up to the ideal and struggle to approximate it.
