Without Heat? Don’t Panic
If your furnace bums oil or propane gas, check the gauges to see if you’re out of fuel. If it bums utility gas, check other gas appliances to see whether your main gas supply has been cutoff.
If that doesn’t solve the riddle, check the pilot light. Instructions for re-lighting the pilot light should be located somewhere on the unit. If the pilot light fails to light, or stay lit, call your local utility servicing agent for help or advice.
Whatever fuel you may use in your central furnace, additional things to investigate include:
Checking the electric switch that controls some function of the unit, such as the blower. It may have accidentally been switched off. If the furnace has its • own fuse, circuit breaker or reset, check those for proper operation. Remember that reset devices on oil furnaces should be activated no more than once. Finally, check the fuses or circuit breakers in your main electrical distribution box. 0
If the furnace appears to be operating properly and burning fuel, but you still don’t receive enough heat, the air filters may need cleaning.
If these steps do not restore the furnace to operation, call the utility company which provides service in your area. If the unit is fueled by oil or propane, call your fuel oil dealer or a company that specializes in heating and cooling work.
If you are a renter, first contact your landlord. If that doesn’t produce results, then contact your city housing authority or local community action agency to find out how to get the landlord to provide heating service.
