Guthrie had not run competitively over the summer, but he began the fall with a second place finish in the Paul DeBruyn 30 K Road Race in November. Guthrie had won the race last year.
On December 15, Guthrie won the first Ed Root 10K road race in New Smyrna Beach. A writer for The News and, Observer wrote that with the win Guthrie had “reaffirmed his status as Volusia County’s top distance runner....” Guthrie set a personal best record during the race.
