Student Aid Available
A. financial aid workshop was held recently at Rappahannock County High School for seniors and their parents. Often, students may be eligible for monies, and not be aware of the proper channels to be used. Therefore, much of the available funds go unclaimed.
If a student or parent wishes to receive aid, it is important to become involved in the process of searching for sources and making appropriate applications. Any person who has questions regarding available funds for college is encouraged to contact either James T. Futrell or Mary Anne Biggs at the high school.
• Slaughter Backs Amendment
Seventh District Congressman French Slaughter recently joined in cn-sponsoring a proposed Constitutional Amendment to require the Federal government to balance its budget every year. It is the first measure to be formally supported in the 99th Congress by Slaughter, who was sworn in as a new member of the U.S. House of Representatives on January 3.
Under terms of the Slaughter-backed proposal, the president would be required to submit, and the Congress would be required to adopt, a balanced budget before the beginning of each fiscal year.
• Academic Scholarships Offered
Radford University’s Scholars Program is offering academic scholarships ranging from $600 to $4,000 to freshmen and transfer students entering in the fall of 1985.
To qualify for the program high school students must rank in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class or have SAT scores totaling 1200. Students transfering from a community college or other fouryear institution will be chosen on the basis of their previous college records.
Application deadline is Feb. 1, and winners will be announced in March.
