Rescue Squad Volunteers Needed
There is a great need for rescue squad volunteers within the planning district, especially in the daytime. All of the twenty-two rescue squads in Planning District Nine«pperate on a volunteer basis, and all of those volunteers who provide hands on patient care are required by the state to be licensed Emergency Medical Technician’s/Ambulance.
Most volunteers have daytime jobs, families, or other commitments and have a tendency to be more available for their services during the evening. Therefore, virtually every rescue squad in this area has a daytime manpower problem. The Emergency Medical Services office is making every attempt to rectify this potentially dangerous situation before local government is forced to hire paid rescue personnel to provide staff during the daytime hours.
• Viguerie Seeks Nomination
Richard Viguerie, Warrenton businessman, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor of Virginia. Citing as his goal to become “the people’s lobbyist in Richmond,” Viguerie believes that as a fresh face in Richmond, he can provide leadership free from “the buddy system that so often thwarts the popular will.”
Long a conservative Republican activist as a private citizen, Viguerie proposed a series of initiatives which he believes would help restore public participation in government and begin to control “runaway” state spending. Chief among his programs were a call for a referendum option on all new state taxes, a refund to the taxpayers of Virginia’s revenue surplus, local option for the election of school boards, and a program by which criminals make restitution to their victims.
Viguerie is the chairman of the Campaign for Virginia, an organization that works for the election of a Republican majority in the General Assembly, and he is publisher of Conservative Digest magazine.
• Hospice Seeks Volunteers
Plans for a spring training program for the Hospice of the Rapidan have been completed, and will take place during March. Two programs will be given; one at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, Rt. 522 North in Boston, Va., and the other in Orange at a site to be announced.
Volunteers are being sought from the Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange County areas, and are urged to contact the Hospice office in Culpeper at 825-4840, or Reverend Steve Scoggins at Washington Baptist Church at 675-3336 or Lorraine Robson, director of the Hospice, at 547-3851.
Specially trained volunteers from the surrounding counties are selected, and will provide care and support in the home or in the hospital for persons with a terminal illness. They will help the patient and the patient’s family reduce their feelings of isolation, keep accurate home care records, support the family in the time of grief and bereavement, and allow the patient the feeling of being able to die with dignity.
Hospice does not replace medical care, does not provide home nursing services, does not connect itself with any specific religious system and does not intrude in the family privacy. All terminally ill people are eligible for services, and there is no charge for caring services. Hospice can help coordinate other necessary services such as home health care, private duty nurses, or medical equipment rental.
