Rappahannock artist Linda Heimstra’s handpainted Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs, currently on display at Brambles’ Cafe, draw and hold the eye—the bold contrasts in color and shape create movement and life, and give identity to each detail of the designs. The images are controlled and lively, with flower petals, scallops and shooting stars all meshing into harmony within the disciplined traditional structure of the hex sign. Whether it is the delicate pastels or a circle of tulips or the rich tones of a strong geometrical pattern, each image is complete and satisfying.
