Large ads in widely-circulated newspapers state that uranium mining can be safely carried on in Virginia despite the absence of proof for this assertion. Uranium mining has never been done in the East where annual precipitation exceeds evaporation. But, unless Virginians wake up, this dubious activity will be carried on in Pittsylvania County and perhaps elsewhere in the state since deposits of this ore have been found in several counties. Marline Corporation and Union Carbide (of Bhopal, India notoriety) are pressing the General Assembly to lift the present moratorium on suchmining in order that they may develop the deposit found in Pittsylvania
