On Thursday, January 9,1 went to the White House for a reception party for Mr. William Ruckelshaus, the director of the Environmental Protection Agency. I was invited because my father works for Mr. Ruckelshaus. The party was in the Roosevelt room in the e West Wing.
The room was filled with paintings of the Roosevelts and one was not finished because the artist died before he could finish the painting. A large table in the center of the room was covered with food. There were three glass bowls of strawberries, and a cooking pot nearby with ten pounds of melted chocolate, which I liked very much. And there were also cookies and pastries all over the table, as weJl as three glass bowls of melon squares. I met half the people in the room, if not more, and finally silence fell across the room, and in walked with President. And to liven things up, he said, “We’re certainly quiet in here!”, and a couple other comments. And then he presented a gift to Mr. Ruckelshaus for all his services to the Environmental Protection Agency.
It was quite a day for me.
