Since t;he weather has become chillier over the past couple of months, Dr. Martin has “seen a lot of viral-type illnesses,” such as colds and the flu. Patients have also been coming in with gastro-intestinal complaints of diarrhea, vomiting and/or cramps.

“Viral-type illnesses have to be treated symptomatically,” Dr. Martin explained, “because there is no cure for viral illnesses. They can’t be treated with antibiotics.”

Determining which type of flu you have (Hong Kong, swine, etc.) through laboratory tests is time consuming and expensive. If you develop a second grade bacterial infection, such as pneumonia, you should head straight for the doctor’s office. A common second grade infection among children is otitis media, which is an ear infection.

If you have an intestinal flu, Dr. Martin might prescribe clear liquids for 24 to 48 hours, possibly in addition to prescription drugs.

“There are no hard and fast rules about how to treat these ‘viral-type’ diseases,” observed Dr. Martin. “Some people are on death’s bed, or at least think they are, while some are over it in a day or two. These things tend to be worse in people
