Robert R. Jacobsen, Superintendent of the Shenandoah National Park, views this easement as a mutually beneficial transaction.
“This was one of the first to be donated by a private individual,” he said. “It was a special action which provided public right-of-way and scenic protection. It provided complete protection of that rim of the Staunton River watershed from exploitive activities which could result in pollution and erosion into the basin.”
“It totally eliminated one of our ’problem points’,” he concluded, referring to an irregular portion of the park’s boundary which previously had been difficult to patrol.
For years to come, this special action will serve as a reminder of how single scenic easement can protect many forest land values: watershed, historic sites, public recreation, and the pleasures of private ownership.
And thepyoung couple, when they “inherited” an easement and all its restrictions, also inherited a lower purchase price for their*property and lower tax rates.
And future generations will inherit many of the same values that attracted the present owners — and their neighbors — to this special Dart of the county.
