The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) is a privately funded conservation organization that has been a leading advocate of Virginia’s easement program. According to PEC, the area currently protected by perpetual scenic easements in Fauquier is 9,000 acres and 3,000 acres in Rappahannock.
The Virginia Outdoors Foundation is only one potential recipient of conservation easements. The Northern Virginia Recreation and Park Authority, Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, American Farmlands Trust and The Nature Conservancy all hold conservation easements in northern Virginia.
Yet another agency, the Nation Park Service, was a recipients in 1981 when Jeannie Edna Light donated an easement which affects 225 acres of her land near Graves Mill.
Her donation was unique. It prohibits - in perpetuity - all timber sales, subdivisions, and construction of new roads and buildings. The owner, at her discretion, can allow hunting on her property. Hikers in the adjoining Shenandoah National Park can walk through the area, but public access is specifically limited to corridors along a historic mountain thouroughfare the National Park Service and the Potomac-Appalachian Trail Club maintain the thoroughfare as a woodland hiking trail.
