But the IRS has not challenged the value claimed on tax forms, and Mrs. Light explained that tax savings were a “secondary” consideration influencing her decision to convey this easement. Tax reductions, she said, have helped to offset her expenses of land appraisal, attorney’s fees and timber evaluation by a consulting forester.
“I believe,” she said, “there’s an incipient problem with water resources and scenic values which this generation is only beginning to understand. Open land is available now which won’t be in another generation.
“Therefore,” she continued, “we’re called now to be stewards of what we have. This easement was the best plan I could possibly implement for the general public and for generations to come.”
