UMTA programs include financial assistance for public transportation in rural and small urban areas under 50,000 people, for urban areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000 people and for non-profit groups which provide transportation for the elderly and the handicapped.

State financial assistance programs provide aid for the. development, administration and promotion of ridesharing experimental programs and for technical assistance to support community efforts to improve or initiate public transportation related services.
