“United /States Senate unanimously passed Senator Paul Trible’s amendment to prohibit the Navy from painting its ships with toxic paint.
“My amendment will ensure the integrity of our environment by delaying the implementation of the Navy’s Organotin fleet painting program. It will provide a decent interval to allow scientific questions to be answered,” Trible said.
Organotin is used to fight the growth of barnacles and other organisms on ship hulls. However, tinbased compounds in the paint, called tributylin’s or TBT’s, are released into the water.
“I will continue to insist that we do nothing that will threaten the marine life of the waters of Virginia and the jobs of our citizens.”
In June, the Navy announced plans to paint all 550 ships with the toxic paint.
