part of a home environment disrupted by tensions, discord, or alcohol and/or drug abuse.

Mental health professinalls have isolated some of the most common and noticeable behaviors that may indicate depression: radical personality changes such as persistent sadness, loss of interest in usual activities, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness along with social withdrawl, noticeable nuyor changes in sleeping or eating patterns, falling grades, difficulty in concentrating, violent or rebellious behavior, and drug and/or alcohol abuse.

Interestingly, physical symptoms such as stomachache, headache or fatigue may be an indication of depression as well.

Often how an adult approaches the child or adolescent may be a key factor in preventing their despondency from worsening. Some adivce I often suggest is: • Don’t lose patience • Take threats seriously • Demonstrate your love • Talk it out whenever possible

In situations where wanting signs continue, particularly over a period of days or weeks, professional help may be needed. Your family physician, minister or teacher can be a valuable source of help in referring a problem to the appropriate mental health specialist.
