Superintendent Robert Estabrook unveiled a proposed 1987-88 school budget of $3,589,396 at Tuesday night’s special board meeting.
Of that total, $218,366 comes from programs funded totally with federal and state “flow-through” money: $35,298 for vocational education, $60,000 for school lunch subsidies, $80,742 for Chapter I entitlement, $30,326 in supplemental special education receipts and $12,000 for Chapter II entitlement. In addition, another $66,469 collected at the two county schools in text book rentals is proposed to “flow through” to pay for new dictionaries, physics, health and math books scheduled to be adopted this year.
With these balanced receipts and expenditures subtracted, the proposed budget’s bottom line stands at $3,432,210 - a 13 percent increase over this year’s school spending for the same items.
The superintendent’s budget includes:
• A 12 percent average increase in teachers’ salaries which will bring the starting pay from $14,912 (129th among Virginia’s 136 school divisions this year) to $16,358 and up the compensation for 25 years experience at the top of the scale from $22,964 to $25,191.
• A salary hike of $3,515 for administrators, including the superintendent, assistant superintendent, special services coordinator and principals and assistant principals at both schools.
• 10 percent raises plus $1 a day for every 10 years experience for classified personnel (aides, bus drivers, custodians and secretarial staff).
• 14 percent raises for the school board office’s administrative secretary and bookkeeper.
