Mr. Goodine said that his only complaint about it is that “no one sees it.” He said that he has taken down the light which illuminated the sign, because “it doesn’t fit there, and I’m not in the shop after dark.” He said that in the future he may replace the light with another, in a different spot, which will fit in better.
He also told the board that he is considering another sign, along the north side of the building between the two windows. “When you’re sitting at the stop sign, all you see is the side of the building . . . It’s not very inviting.”
“It’s such an attractive building,” Mrs. Willis replied. “It makes you want to see what’s inside.”
Mr. Goodine’s application was approved unanimously.
In other action, the ARB:
• Heard Mrs. Miller advise the board that, because of complaints she has received at the post office, the Postal Service may apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness for signs designating five of the parking places in front of the post office as reserved for post office customers.
• Mrs. Miller requested that Mayor Dean Morehouse consider purchasing a tape recorder to record the proceedings at public meetings. “In sticky situations, it might come in handy,” she said.
“If you keep good minutes... the end result is what counts,” Mayor Morehouse replied. “It’s a sad commentary on the state of affairs that recorders are necessary.”
• Heard a request from Mrs. Willis to purchase another book, House of Boughs, and a subscription to Historic Preservation magazine, to add to the reference collection at the county library. Mrs. Willis added that the ARB will gratefully accept any donations of reference books or magazines relating to historic preservation and restoration. The collection will be available to the public at the Rappahannock County Public Library.
• Noted that an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness from contractor Peter Kreyling for work being done on a house on Mt. Salem Ave. was to be considered, but that because he was , not in attendance po action could betaken. i°';
• Authorized the ARB secretary, Mr. Thomasson, to notify ^ the zoning office in writing of the ARB’s approval of the permit fee schedule adopted by Town Council.
• Reviewed a draft of the proposed revisions to the town’s Historic District Ordinance submitted by zoning administrator John McCarthy. The draft was drawn up by Mr. McCarthy and
