Last week in part 1 of Un- \ derstanding Righteousness we saw that the Bible teaches us to awake to righteousness and sin not. When we sin we are a victim of condemnation, we lose our sense of righteousness. We are still righteous in God’s sight because of what Jesus has done for us (Romans 5:17-21 & 2 Corinthians 5:21). When we have sinned we can go to The Father God according to 1 John 1:9 and confess our sin and the Bible says God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. When we are cleansed of sin we gain our confidence back and also our sense of righteousness.
In order to walk in a sense of righteousness we must abide in Jesus Christ. To abide means to dwell or live. We can abide in Christ by following his commandments to love one another and to serve him with our whole heart. We glorify God when we abide in Christ because when we abide in Christ we bear much fruit, that glorifies God.
If we are a Christian we will want our lives to bear good fruit, fruit that appeals to others. The Holy Spirit is our helper, he abides in our spirit (the real us) he will convict us when we sin and then always lead us to God’s word. We know that God’s word chastens and corrects us. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16 that the scriptures are inspired by God and they instruct us in righteousness.
So if you want to be in rightstanding and at peace with God, believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is the son of God and was raised from the dead and then confess with your mouth that he is your Lord and you shall be saved and made new. For with your heart you believe unto righteousness and with your mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9 & 10).
