Rappahannock Huntsman Oliver Brown’s Roman Hunt, a veteran of the steep Rappahannock terrain, is also expected to give the field a run for its money.
In the Mount Salem, Cinzano, a 14-year-old who last week left the competition in his muddy wake at Casanova, is expected to pace the ladies’ field in a 2Vb-mile timber test. Patti Cassel has entered two challengers to Cinzano, Avid Speaker and Splashy Lea. Eva Dahlgren, riding Ahwaz, and Kip Holloway, aboard Baron Zantippy, will also vie for the top women’s honors.
Thirteen entries are set for the maiden hurdle race, 13/4 miles over hurdles. For juniors, there is a 2/3 mile race following the maiden hurdle. Ten horses and nine ponies are entered.
The Durant Hill Hurdle is sixth on the day’s card. Essayer, who took top honors in the open hurdle at Casanova, will defend that title. A challenge will be mounted by Make the Move and News Special, third and fourth place finishers at Casanova.
Foxhunters are next up, vying for honors in the William Noble Lane race, run at,two miles over the Rappahannnock Hunt’s home territory. 4 Bail’s Bluff ana Gala Blackjack, second and third respectively at Casanova, will lead the field.
Hie Ben Venue, run for the Seven Corners Championship, caps the day’s timber racing. Entries include Satan’s Light, winner Sunday at Casanova, Marat, last year’s champion at Thornton Hill, Cookin ’N Lookin and Oriental Express.
The last race of the day is the renowned hound race, open to all hound owners in Rappahannock Hunt territory and/or members of the Northern Virginia Foxhunters Association. About 100 foxhounds are expected to. participate in this wild event around a track dragged with fox scent.
The pre-paid parking has already exceeded last year, he said, adding that there is ample parking and there should be no problem with the mud which plagued Casanova last weekend.
“If the weather holds, we couldn’t ask for a better race day,” Mr. Carter concluded. “Come early, bring a lunch, and plan to stay late. It should be a great day.”
