The Cougars,' second-ranked in Class A state polls, easily defeated Rappahannock 87-69 to clinch a title berth, disappointing Panther partisans who hoped for a repeat of the season’s earlier upset of Manassas Park, who suffered their only district loss at the hands of the Panthers.
It was not to be.
The first quarter was a harbinger of the contest’s tone, as the Cougars outscored Rappahannock 22-15. Manassas Park saw 16 of those points scored by Eugene Baltimore with nine, and J. T. Johnson seven.
The Panthers settled into a pattern in the second period, matching Manassas Park nearly point for point. Still, the Cougars held a 39-31 advantage as the teams headed for the locker room at halftime.
